Best 2024 Punk and Alternative Rock Albums by JamieOretro

Below is a list of 20 new albums I've enjoyed in alphabetical order, which released in 2024 (alternative, emo, garage rock, grunge, hardcore, pop-punk, punk and street-punk).

  • Alkaline Trio 'Blood, Hair, and Eyeballs' (Rise Records, 26th Jan. 2024). Classic Chicago punk.
  • Buffalo Tom 'Jump Rope' (Scrawny Records, 31st May 2024). Alternative rock that made me reminisce about 1993's 'Big Red Letter Day'.
  • Cheekface 'It's Sorted' (Self-released, 22nd Jan. 2024). Wacky, off-the-wall indie rock from Los Angeles.
  • Cloud Nothings 'Final Summer' (Pure Noise Records, 19th April 2024). Charming, Cleveland based indie rockers.
  • Drug Church 'Prude' (Pure Noise Records, 4th Oct. 2024). Possibly my favourite album of 2024.
  • Fontaines D.C. 'Romance' (XL Records, 23rd Aug. 2024). Irish post-punk from Dublin, growing huge in popularity.
  • Four Year Strong 'Analysis Paralysis' (Pure Noise Records, 9th Aug. 2024). A swift songwriting studio turnaround for this easycore, pop-punk band's latest album.
  • Green Day 'Saviors' (Reprise Records, 19th Jan. 2024). Arguably the best Green Day album since 'American Idiot'.
  • Knocked Loose 'You Won't Go Before You're Supposed To' (Pure Noise Records, 10th May 2024). Hardcore hits the big time!
  • Mannequin Pussy 'I Got Heaven' (Epitaph Records, 1st March 2024). Fourth album by Philadelphia punks.
  • Mean Jeans 'Blasted' (Fat Wreck Chords, 9th Feb. 2024). Super fun, Fat Wreck Ramonescore.
  • Omni 'Souvenir' (Sub Pop Records, 16th Feb. 2024). Quirky Sub Pop post-punk.
  • Origami Angel 'Feeling Not Found' (Counter Intuitive Records, 27th Sept. 2024). Thrillho recommended Origami Angel to me at the start of 2024 in this The Music Thread. Thank you, Thrillho!
  • Pearl Jam 'Dark Matter' (Monkeywrench Records, 19th April 2024). Seattle grunge greats' twelfth album.
  • Pinhead Gunpowder 'Unt' (1-2-3-4 Go! Records, 18th Oct. 2024). Consistently superb, East Bay, Californian punk, written by Billie Joe Armstrong and Jason White.
  • Planes Mistaken for Stars 'Do You Still Love Me?' (Deathwish Inc. Records, 1st Nov. 2024). Fifth album by post-hardcore and emo legends.
  • Smashing Pumpkins 'Aghori Mhori Mei' (Thirty Tigers Records, 2nd Aug. 2024). It feels like the 1990s again with new Buffalo Tom, Pearl Jam and Smashing Pumpkins in 2024!
  • Sprints 'Letter to Self' (City Slang Records, 5th Jan. 2024). Debut album by post-punk, garage grungy Dubliners.
  • The Chisel 'What a Fu**ing Nightmare' (Pure Noise Records, 9th Feb. 2024). Gritty London street-punk.
  • The Story So Far 'I Want to Disappear' (Pure Noise Records, 21st June 2024). Fifth album by Californian pop-punkers.

**** Edit: Whoops, I forgot to include Green Day's 2024 album, 'Saviors'! I must have been distracted by Pinhead Gunpowder. ****

Wishing a very most excellent 2025 to all of the music fans at Push Square!

@JamieO YES! There it is

Quite I few on there I know but a few I don't which I'll have to check out.

And some of my own picks of the year;

Gaffa Tape Sandy - Hold My Hand God Damn It

A sublime melodic pop punk/punk rock album with the dual male/female vocals really adding to it. Not a bad track on the album and each one has quite a different vibe.

Bicurious - Your Life is Over Now...

A furious mix of rock, math rock, post rock with a huge sound from the two guys. Some amazing guitar work.

Kid Kapachi - There Goes the Neighbourhood

Another mix of genres but filled with attitude and swagger. These guys would be a riot to see live.

Floating Points - Cascade

My electronic album of the year. Absolute bangers that eases off the gas towards the end for some more chilled out tracks.

hey, nothing - Maine EP

Indie folk and EP of the year. Only four tracks but they're all hauntingly beautiful and I can't stop listening to it.

And the personalised @JamieO 2024 recommendation goes to BAD MOVES - Wearing Out the Refrain which is a fun pop punk album with the video below featuring members of Cheekface, Martha, and Chris Farren among others.

@Thrillho Proper great stuff, mate! When I posted my Best 2024 Punk and Alternative Rock list here I was hoping that you'd see it, and I had my fingers crossed that you'd share some recommendations, too. Result!

It's taken me a few days to reply, but that's because I wanted to give all of your 2024 music picks a decent listen.

I started with 'Wearing Out The Refrain' by Bad Moves, as it was a personalised recommendation, and I've been loving that album. Don Giovanni has Bad Moves' full 2024 album on YouTube here, so I've listened to it many times.

I listened to all of Gaffa Tape Sandy's 'Hold My Hand, God Damn It' next, and I plan to check out Bicurious' 'Your Life is Over Now...' more as my third listen, because I'm in the mood for some math rock guitar work.

I really appreciate that you posted your picks here, and especially how you personalised some of it to my tastes, Thrillho. I'm away visiting family this weekend, but I have a couple more 2024 albums to list, so I'll add your picks to my bullet point list later on.

It's become a bit of a tradition to talk about the year's best albums with you now, so I hope 2025 is a quality year for you, and I look forward to discussing the new music that's released this year, too.
Big cheers to you!

Well, it’s the end of an era. Off to see Sum 41 tonight for the final time. Mixed emotions for sure but mostly just glad I get to see them off. Canadian legends.

@Jimmer-jammer How was it mate? Surreal to think they’re calling it a day. I only managed to see them once, in 2003, on a bill with System of a Down and Metallica. They were a great time 😃

I Have No Idea Where This Will Lead Us, But I Have A Definite Feeling It Will Be A Place Both Wonderful And Strange.
